Tips For Preparing For A Headshot Session When You Don’t Like Being Photographed

> Arrive early - There’s nothing more stressful than being late to an appointment and arriving looking harassed and a little red in the face.

> Be yourself - Stick to your usual style in terms of clothing, hair, makeup etc because you don’t want to regret an ill advised green eye shadow. It’s important to feel as comfortable as possible with your appearance and also be recognisable to your clients!

> Avoid heavily patterned clothes or clothes with big, distracting logos.

> Book a photographer that you have good chemistry with - There are lots of ways to photograph people and so it’s important that you book someone that feels like a good fit for you and your team. For me, the key to being able to take the best shots of my clients is to connect with them. I want to make them laugh because not only does that immediately help them to feel more relaxed but you can see a physical difference in their posture in the images.

> Decide on a location - I chat to my clients about the sort of look they are going for. Standing in front of a white background isn’t for everyone and so if you’d prefer a more natural approach to your headshots, then that’s totally possible.

> Be honest if you’re nervous because your photographer can help reassure you and give additional guidance if it’s needed.

> During the shoot, think about something daft to take your mind off the camera. It sounds silly, but thinking about other things will give you a more natural expression.

> Review the images - I will always allow my clients to have a look at the back of the camera to make sure that they are pleased with what they see. I’m happy to say that most of the time they are pleasantly surprised by how great they look but sometimes they want to make some adjustments to hair or clothes and we’ll then reshoot. Having a collaborative approach to a shoot is really important to get the best results for my clients.
